InSPIRESS is an engineering project for high school juniors and seniors. The students talk and present to engineer students and teachers from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Science Objectives
Primary | Subsurface Ocean
Europa is a very interesting moon because it has an ocean underneath it's icy surface! As we know from the history our own planet, Earth first started out covered in water which microorganisms were able to appear and live in. With the idea of a subsurface ocean, scientists believe that Europa's subsurface ocean could have components for life! We will be using plumes--our secondary science objective--to gain access to the subsurface ocean to determine the composition of the water and look for those components of life!

Another interesting aspect of Europa is its plumes. Plumes are basically volcanoes that are spewing out water from the subsurface ocean or a reservoir! However, there is so much still unknown about them! Many scientists say that plumes on Europa could be undetectable, we don't know how deep they truly go, and we don't even know what truly happens when it erupts. We will have instruments in order to record the plume eruptions and also determine when the plume will erupt.
